High School Football

i think we all need to have faith that a new system will be put in place to help our smaller schools compete. there's no way the VHSL will continue on with schools like Lee (enrollment #'s) being single A and competing against St. Paul, Appy, & Burton for region titles in all sports except football.

Don't count on it...NOVA and Eastern VA call the shots...we have to play by their rules which don't favor us...

I say we need a 5A system like Tennessee has. 5A in football and 3A in everything else.

Lee has played for only 1 State title. Against TABB in 1990

I believe that if you look at the VHSL enrollment numbers for 06-07 you will see that there were no schools with more that 700 students in Single A. When you look at the 07-08 numbers I believe that you will see that there will be at least 7 schools with 700 stundents or more. The problems arise as more large schools are built in VA and the VHSL divides the # of schools into three eaqual groups, not counting those schools that petition to play up. People may complain about Lee being in single A now but at the rate their enrollment is dropping and large scools are being built in eastern VA it would be just a matter of time until the VHSL would have assigned them to single. The problems with travel never had anything to do with football. I seem to recall Lee traveling to Pulaski Co. a AAA school in 1998.It was the other sports especially since girls basketball was moved.

you're right, but several will have more than 700 students in the next two-year cycle. here are links to both cycles:

Lee High, believe it or not, would much rather play AA ball. Dropping to single A with such a large enrollment is a no win situation, as any success will be attributed to the size advantage. For all of you with short memories, Lee High played AA ball for fourteen years before ever mentioning dropping, and there were no complaints, even though the travel was brutal. Lee never would have mentioned dropping except that the Highlands District kept losing teams, and the Southwest District started trying to force a merger with the Highlands, which would really have put Lee at a disadvantage. People say Lee brought this on themselves by choosing to consolidate, but who could forsee the demise of the Highlands years into the future?
